How Harold Camping marketed the Rapture

Self-made prophet with $117 million radio network spreads worldwide message that the Apocalypse will begin at 6 p.m. ET Saturday

LOS ANGELES - Some Americans have extreme plans this weekend. A religious leader named Harold Camping has convinced them the end of the world starts at 6 p.m. ET Saturday.
Most of the world's faithful do not believe the date is Judgment Day. But as CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports, it seems just about everyone's seen the signs about the end of the world.
"May 21st, 2011 is the day of judgment," a Family Radio ad says. It's a prophecy aggressively peddled by 89-year-old Harold Camping, a civil engineer and self-taught Biblical sage.
"You and I are living at the time of the end of the world," Camping says.
End of World prediction disputedHe claims to have discerned the date from numerological calculations revealed by his reading of the Bible. He spread his prophecy around the world through broadcasts on his Family Radio network in 84 languages, on RV caravans and on 1,200 billboards around the country.
So how much would Doomsday cost?
According to Camping, starting Saturday, "There's going to be a huge earthquake that's going to make the big earthquake in Japan seem like a Sunday school picnic."
"We want people to know that there are a few hours left to cry out to him for mercy," says Ken Ronning.
Trumpeting the apocalypse doesn't come cheap. Family Radio spent as much as $1 million on the billboard campaign. It can afford to. Camping's radio network was worth about $22 million in 2002 -- by 2008 it was valued at more than $117 million.
"It's a combination of a very new and rather peculiar way of reading the Bible coupled with brilliant 20th century American marketing," says Rev. Michael Seiler of St. Matthew's Episcopal Chruch.
It's become a cultural touchstone for late night comics. David Letterman recently joked, "The No. 1 way to make the apocalypse for fun? More fun? What's more fun than the apocalypse for God's sake?"
The end of the world has been predicted more than 100 times in the last 100 years. In fact, Harold Camping predicted the end once before - in 1994. This time he says he's certain.

As the gathering drew to a close, the Buddha grasped the
tea cup and made a move to rise from His lion seat when suddenly
he changed his mind, leant back and said to ânanda
and the assembly: You ÷ràvakas and pratyeka-buddhas need
to study more in your quest of Supreme Bodhi: I have taught
you the method of correct cultivation but you still do not know
the subtle states of Màra which appear when you practise
÷amatha-vipa÷yanà. When they manifest, if you fail to distinguish
them and if your minds are not in a right state, you will
fall into the evil ways of either the demons or your five aggregates,
of the heavenly Màras, of ghosts and spirits, or of mischievous
sprites. If you are not. clear about them, you will
mistake thieves for your own sons. Further, you may regard
some little progress as complete achievement, like the untutored
Bhikùu who when he reached the fourth dhyàna
heaven presumed that he had become a saint; after he had enjoyed
his reward in heaven, all indications of his approaching
fall appeared.. As he vilified the arhats, he created the karma of
future incarnation and then fell into the avãci hell. You should
listen carefully to what I now tell you in detail.
ânanda rose from his seat and, with all those requiring
further study, prostrated himself at the Buddhas feet and
awaited His compassionate instruction.
The Buddha said: You should all know that the clear
substance of the profound and bright basic Bodhi of all living
beings of the twelve types of birth in saüsàra is that of all
Buddhas in the ten directions. It is because you think wrongly
that you are not clear about the noumenon and so become
stupid and full of desires which lead to your complete delusion.
Hence the (relative) voidness, and as you are always deluded,
the world is falsely created. All countries countless as
dust are in saüsàra because of your obstinate wrong thinking.
But you should know that (relative) voidness is created in
your minds, like a small cloud that is but a speck in the great
emptiness; how much more so is the world which is within this
(relative) voidness? If you realize the real to return to the
source, the void in the ten directions will vanish. Why, then,
will not all the countries in that voidness shake and crack?
When you practise dhyàna to preserve the state of
samàdhi, all Bodhisattvas, and all great arhats whose essence
of mind is already penetrative, are unmoved, but the kings of
the demons, ghosts, spirits and lower heavens are shocked
to see their palaces break open without cause and the great
earth shake and crack; all those on earth and in the air take
fright whereas worldly men who are deluded do not feel anything,
because these demons, though they have acquired
five supernatural powers, still fail to realize transcendental
insight into the ending of the stream of transmigration for
they have not broken their links with saüsàra; how can they
let you destroy their dwellings? This is why they come to
trouble and annoy you when you enter the state of samàdhi.
However, in spite of their rage, these demons are there
in your profound state of bodhi and are like people trying in
vain to blow out sunlight and to cut water with a sword, while
you are like boiling water that melts solid ice. Though they
rely on their super natural powers, they are but externals and
will only succeed in destroying you if you, who own the five
aggregates in your minds, are deluded and let them do so.
For these demons cannot harm you in your state of dhyàna
if you are awakened and are not deluded. If you wipe out the
(five) aggregates, you will enter the state of brightness wherein
all demons are but dark vapours. Since light destroys darkness,
they will perish as soon as they approach you; how
then dare they disturb the state of samàdhi?

I will try not to comment much on this topic..but be aware he was right about the fifth agreement..and wrong only about one of the agreements(that's pretty good for a not-realized guy..but hey..he did his best...and no,I won't tell you what agreement he was wrong..you figure it out by yourself,since the same power whom makes a wisdom muscle raise up during the thunderstorms of life..is the same power whom makes the sunshine,or the coyote beg for a cheese-sandwich in the Nevada desert of this desire realm,where we are all born..make experiences...think you are here to enjoy them..then dead we are,in some coffin...please be aware of your true essence,because the subconscious reincarnates and you'll go over and over..till you can try true meditation.

Don't waste your life in mind-forms..discover the ONE beyond it..then you can control the manifestation,as the mahayogi Kripto does,..loved in the 3 realms,worshiped in 10..celebrated in the 18th also by himself only..ponder grasshoppers..

GAIAM: Why do you think that The Four Agreements book was so well received, being that it was a New York Times best-seller for more than 7 years?


DON MIGUEL—The Four Agreements showed everybody how easy it is just to be happy. It’s nothing but common sense. It’s universal, not just from Mexico, really. It has come directly from the human intelligence.
Once you read it and start applying it, even later—months after—you will see that it’s like you read another book, and it’s not that the book changed, but you changed, because the limitations that you used to have before no longer exist. It’s like you have a guide in your pocket.


How did creation of The Fifth Agreement come about?


DON JOSE—In 2002, when my dad had his heart attack, followed by a nine-week coma, I had the reflection and I had the inspiration that I was going to continue on with his teachings. Seven years have past and this book is the creation that came out of it.


The fifth agreement is to be skeptical, but learn to listen—to learn to listen from your heart. It’s to be skeptical about the problems, about the drama, about all the negative emotions that are offered to us in this life, so that when we learn to listen, we know what is good for us.


DON MIGUEL—This agreement is the level of mastery, when you finally finish with yourself completely, and you can be in world and you no longer need any teacher, any guru, because you become your own teacher, your own guru.


Describe the four agreements.


DON MIGUEL—The first is to be impeccable with the word. Which means speaking with integrity and saying only what you mean. This also means avoiding gossip and using your word in favor of love and truth.


The second agreement is to not take anything personally because everybody creates their own reality, their own world, and whatever lives in their world is different than what lives in your world. We make the assumption that everybody around us lives the same way we do, and judges the same way we judge—and this is not true at all. By not taking anything personally, well, we have that immunity in our relationships with everybody around us.


And when we don’t make assumptions, with the third agreement, that gives us immunity in the relationship that we have with ourselves.


I know that the first three agreements are a little difficult, but the fourth agreement is what makes a difference, because it’s something that everyone can do, and it’s always do your best—it’s the only thing we can do.
Just by following these simple four agreements, we can break thousands and thousands of false agreements that we create and that rule our lives.

BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD:


Speak with integrity. Say only whay you mean. Avoid using the work to speak against yourself or gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.


DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY:


Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.






DON'T MAKE ASSUPTIONS:


Find the courage to ask questions and express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just his one agreement, you can completely transform your life.


ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST:


Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret.


BE SKEPTICAL, BUT LEARN TO LISTEN:


Don't believe yourself or anybody else.Use the power of doubt to question everything you hear: is it really the truth? Listen to the intent behind the words, and you will understand the real message.


Why didn’t you include the fifth agreement in this first book?


DON MIGUEL—As you see, this agreement comes from the other four agreements, and the reason that I didn’t include it 13 years ago is because at that time the people that I tried to teach, they were not ready for this agreement, but Don Jose proved me wrong by teaching it.


What do you mean when you say we are all messengers?


DON MIGUEL—When we’re children, we receive messages from everybody—from our parents, from the school, from everything—we hear all those opinions, we make all those opinions ours, and we learn a way to grow up and start sharing all those opinions with everybody. We are always giving and receiving information, giving messages, then, by nature we are all messengers. But we don’t have the awareness, we just give the message without awareness, and we destroy many of the messages that we send and receive.


What kind of messenger are you? Are you delivering lies, or are you delivering truth?


DON JOSE—We are all messengers because we are all artists—Toltec means ‘artist’. When you ask yourself what kind of messenger are you, it’s like asking yourself what kind of life am I living? Do I love my life? Do I like the life I’m living? Well if you don’t like it you can change your life, and if you don’t like your message you can change your message. And this is the beautiful part to realize—that we are storytellers and we can create the most beautiful story.


Talk about the experience of the collaboration of working on a book together?


DON JOSE—The collaboration of this book is the message of me teaching with my father, and just the love between us. I am very grateful to him, for standing by me through all my stupidity while I was growing up. Now I have the opportunity to be with him and to share his message—this is the best gift that can be.


What would tell someone who was trying to follow the agreements everyday? Who wanted to wake up everyday be reminded of them and practice them?


DON JOSE— People should always remember to respect their world, to respect their body, to respect their mind, and do not let any dream of poison have them sacrifice their heaven away, because what could be more powerful—what heartbreak, what drama—could be more powerful that we would give our heaven away? Always remember, the faith is in ourselves and we can transform with action and love for ourselves.


Is there a sixth agreement?


DON JOSE—No, this is the last. But there is nothing else to explain. When you become your own teacher, and apprentice, that’s basically when you learn respect, and you learn to live in a dream of gratitude—and gratitude is gratitude to be alive, gratitude to have a body.


And what do you hope people will take away from reading this book?


DON JOSE—Well, the most beautiful message that is in this book, is to help us to change the world—and we’re not talking about the world outside of us, I mean the world inside our minds.
